Rate of reactions

Cards (8)

  • Effect of concentration on the rate of reaction more particles in the same volume, more chance of collision in the same frequency which means a higher rate of reaction
  • What is collision theory?
The surface area in contact with the liquid reactant is greater. There are more solid particles exposed on the surface for the liquid particles to collide with. The frequency of successful collisions therefore increases
  • what factors effect the rate of reaction
Change in concentration, change in pressure, increase in surface area, catalyst and increase in temperature
  • If the surface area decreased there would be less particles to collide into decreasing the frequency of reactions
  • What are catalysts?
they are substances that: speed up a chemical reaction, remain unchanged at the end of the reaction, they do not get used up during the reaction and can be used multiple times
  • How will changing the pressure effect reaction rates?

it will only affect the rate of reaction if the reactants are gassses. The rate will increase if pressure is increased. Increasing the press makes the same number of particles fit into a smaller volume. Particles become closer together so the frequency of successful collisions increase.
  • The effect of temperature
when the temperature is increased, the kinetic energy of the particles increases, meaning the particles are moving faster and colliding more frequently. This means there’s re more particles with the required amount of energy to react ( called activation energy)
  • what does adding a catalyst do?

It gives the reaction and alternative route for it to happen with a lower energy with a lower activation energy
