required practical 3: electrolysis

    Cards (2)

    • steps
      1. 50cm cubed of copper chloride solution in a beaker
      2. use a petri dish with two holes as a lid
      3. insert two carbon grahite rods ( electrodes )
      4. they can not touch or it will produce a short circuit
      5. connect rods to crocodile leads then connect to a low voltage power supply
      6. turn it on to 4 volts
      7. anode: chlorine gas (halogen)
      8. cathode: copper
      9. repeat with sodium chloride
    • electrolysis of an aqueous solution
      • anode : oxygen is produced unless halide ions are present
      • cathode: hydrogen will be produced unless the metal is less reactive than hydrogen
