  • The rebellion was a result of Henry’s attempts to raise money to aid Brittany against France.
  • The parliament granted Henry a subsidy of £100,000 but little was raised.
  • Yorkshire had had a bad harvest in 1488 and was annoyed that the other northern states didn’t have to pay tax (instead defended border) but they did even though they thought to be geaographically irrelevant.
  • Henry refused to negotiate so when the Earl of Northumberland tried to collect the tax, he was murdered.
  • The rebellion was led by Sir John Egremont (Yorkist supporter).
  • The rising was easily crushed by the army.
  • Henry recognised that he had weak authority in the north, so the Earl of Surrey was appointed as he had no vested interest there and his loyalty was secured as the restoration of his own states depended upon his success.
