Cards (5)

  • Peritoneal Dialysis
    • Administered through a semi-permeable membrane that is Peritoneum
    • Dialysate content: H2O + Sugar - Hypotonic Solution to allow transfer of solutes from bloodstream to the peritoneum
    • Technique: Sterile
    • Insertion site: Below umbilicus due to decreased vascularity
  • Complications of Peritoneal Dialysis
    • Peritonitis - PRIOTY; rigid-board like abdomen
    • Hyperglycemia - due to overdwell time
  • Peritoneal Dialysis
    Nursing Interventions:
    • Instruct to void.
    • Dialysate solution: warm. Increases urea excretion due to vasodilation as well as reduces the likelihood of abdominal cramps
    • Cycle: infusion is 10 minutes; dwell time is 20 minutes; drainage is 30 minutes
    • First few bottles of drainage - pink-tinged dt trauma
    • If the drainage stops, turn the client to sides.
    • Position: Semi-fowler's - to prevent dyspnea dt compression of the diaphragm by the fluids
    • Cloudy dialysate = peritonitis.
    • Monitor urine and blood glucose levels. The dialysate contains glucose.
  • Peritoneal Dialysis
How often: daily every 6-8 hours
  • Peritoneal Dialysis
    Dialysate Color
    • normal - clear
