Availability of technology

Cards (2)

  • Productive agriculture benefits from the development and availability of technologies. These include: pesticides, fertilisers, genetic improvements through breeding programmes, machinery and equipment and supporting infrastructure such as transport systems, refrigeration and food processing.
  • Survey technology is used to provide better information that can be used to inform better decision making. GPS mapping and the use of drone and satellite surveys are used to monitor a wide range of factors such as: rates of photosynthesis, biomass estimation, soil water content, the spread of pests and diseases, the cropped area of the fields. Computer-based monitoring of the yields produced in different areas of field can be used to better control fertiliser application in each area for future crops. This maximises yields while avoiding wastage and minimising environmental impacts.
