Inheritence in action

Cards (9)

  • Homozygous- an individual with two identical allles for a characteristic e.g. DD,dd
  • phenotype-describes physical appearance of an individual regarding a particular characteristic e.g. dimples, no dimples
  • heterozygous- an individual with different alleles for a characteristic
  • genotype- describes the genetic makeup of an individual regarding a particular characteristic
  • genes- the chromosomes you inherit carry you genetic information
  • alleles- many of these genes have different versions
  • each allele does for different versions of protein
the combination of alleles you inherit will determine your characteristics
  • dominant alleles- always expressed in the genotype, even if one copy is present. shown always using a capital letter
  • recessive alleles- expressed if 2 copies are present. shown using lowercase letter
