  • What is an Agribusiness?
An Agribusiness is a more intensive farming method that involves the application of business skills, and modern machinery in oder to increase crop yeild
  • What is Biotechnology
Biotechnology is Genetically modifying crops to be able to grow faster or become less vulnerable to pests and diseases
  • Give two genetic modifications for crops
    -Drought resistance
    -Pest & disease resistant
  • Why are genetically modified crops controversial
Due to their negative side effects to humans and environmental effects aren't fully understood
  • What is Food insecurity?
Being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food.
  • What is food security?
Food security is when people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food in order to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle
  • The world has enough food to feed everyone however, many countries still starve as this food isnt properly distributed
  • What is Famine
Famine is a widespread, serious shortage of food leading to starvation and even death
  • What is undernutriton
When people do not eat enough food to cover their needs for energy and growth, or to maintain a healthy immune stytem
  • What is seasonal Produce?
Seasonal Produce is food that is only available during the months in which it was grown
  • What are the issues of the increasing demand for non-seasonal produce all year round in the UK?
-Food has to be transported often thousands of miles which adds to food miles and emits harmful gases into our environment
-Exploitation of workers in LIC'S like Kenya where labour costs aere lower and environmental legislations are weaker
-LIC'S like Kenya end up producing all the food for us and very little is left for them causing nation wide food shortages
  • In the UK there is an increasing demand for both Seasonal produce all year round and organic produce
  • What is organic produce?
Food which is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods on organic farms without the use of chemicals like artificial fertilisers and pesticides.
  • Give 3 ways in which organic farming is done
-Pests are controlled by using natrual predators
-Weeds are controlled by either hands or machines, not chemicals
-Crops are rotated so the farmers can maintain the fertility of their fields
  • What are food miles?
Food miles is the distance our food has traveled to get to the consumer
  • What is the worst type of food transportation?
Air-frieghted- causes large amounts of air pollution
  • Give 4 alternatives rather than eating imported foods in the UK
-Try grow some on your own allotment
    -Eat only seasonal produce
-Look for the red tractor lable to show the food is British
    -Eat locally grown food
  • Give 3 ways to that show how Agribusinesses have increased food production
-Increasing in size and buying up smaller farms or removing hedgrows or draining wetlands
-Applying huge amounts of chemicals like fertilisers and pesticides
-Using the modern and efficient machinery
  • What are the postives for Agribusiness?
Agribusinesses improve food security at cheaper prices for consumers.
  • What are 2 negatives for Agribusiness?
-Many small farms have been forces out of business as the big agribusinesses have more power over the market price of goods
-Negative consequences for the environment due to the large amounts of chemicals used, which can also polute water systems
  • What is malnutrition
Malnutrition is where people eat the right amount of calories but dont have a balanced diet and not having enough nutrients
  • Give 2 reasons why food consumption is increasing
    -Population increase
    -Economic development
  • Many countries are rapidly developing. NEEs such as China and india are becoming welthier and so are their citizens. With more money comes an increase in demand for more and different produce, NEEs will need more land to meet the new needs of their new lifestyles
  • What are the 6 factors that effect food supply?
    -Climate
    -Pest & diseases
    -Technology
    -Water supply
    -Conflict
    -Poverty
  • What is water stress?
When the demand for water exceeds the available amount
  • Famine and undernutrition also effect food supply as they dont have the energy or health to work on the farms and produce the right amount of food
  • What is irrigation?
Irrigation is the application of water to land in order to supply crops with the right amount of water. This will help maintain the crops productivity when water supply is low
  • What is the negative to using irrigation?
Irrigation is not environmentaly friendly as they increase evaportion losses of water and increase the salinity of soils
  • What is Aeroponics?
Aeroponics involves growing plants in an air or mist environment without the use of soil
  • What is a positive for Aeroponics?
It can be easily moved and stored as well as enabeling quicker growth
  • What is Hydroponics?
Hydroponics involves growing plants in a mineral nutrient solution without soil.
  • What is a positive to using hydroponics?
The same as Aeroponics but hydroponics can also enable the plants/crops to be transported in the nutrient base allowing for fresher crops on arrival
  • What is a negative to using Areoponics and Hydroponics?
It is very expensive and requires specalist knowledge, this may not be an option for LIC'S
  • What is the new green revolution?

This involves changing farm practices in parts of LIC'S by using the technology and ideas we use, However for some farmers this increased their debt and damaged their natural environment due to using chemicals.
  • What is the use of Appropraite technology in farming?
This is to improve farming methods in LIC'S by using new and sustainable technology.
  • Areoponics, Hydroponics, biotechnology, Irrigation, the new green revolution and Appropriate technology are all examples of what?
Different stratergies to increase food supply
  • What is permaculture?
Permaculture refers to farming land that we can use forever by respecting the land and animals and working with the land rather than against it
    -Examples of this are
    -Organic farming
    -Urban farming
  • What is sustainable food supply?
Food that is produced in ways that avoid damaging natrual resources, provide social benefits such as good quality and healthy food and contribute to local economies
  • What is urban farming?
Urban farming involves growing crops and raising animals in watsed spaces in towns and cities.
  • What are the positives of Urban farming?
Urban farming is healthier, saves people money and it is local so it cuts the amount of food miles
