  • Steave Neale - Genre theory?
    States that:
->Genres are dominated by repetition (also marked by difference), variation and change
->Genres change, develop and vary as they borrow form, and overlap with one another
->Genres exist within specific economic, institutional and industrial context
  • Todorov's - Equilibrium theory?

-Todorov proposed that every narrative follows a simple three-part structure: equilibrium (the initial balance or stability within a narrative’s world), a disruption (event or a series of events that disturb the original state of balance),and a new equilibrium (where balance is returned).
-Essentially describing the conflict and resolution within narratives and is applicable across a wide range of media forms.
  • Jean Baudrillard - Post Modern Theory?
-Believes society's fixation on artificial simulacra leads to a 'hyperreality' where audiences can find it hard to differentiate between reality (truth) and simulacra because on the surface they are virtually indistinguishable from one another
-Simulacra - images or representation of something/someone which are copies if reality
-Hyperreality - idea that images seem more 'real' than the reality they supposedly represent
  • Stuart Hall - Representation theory?

-An original subject has only one meaning
->So the media can chose is they want to make it positive or negative
->The media gives that subject a meaning, controlling how we view/perceive the subject (profit + power)
->The continuous representation forces a stereotype into peoples mind, to obtain control over the public
