Disadvantages of GM food

• Genetically modified foods may have potentially adverse effects on human health
• The 'new' genes may have an effect on organisms in the environment of GM crops. (if a gene makes a plant resistant to herbicides is transferred into the gene pool of weeds, the weeds may become resistant)
• The high cost of GM seed and the fact that farmers are dependent on seed companies to purchase new seeds every year, increases the cost of food production.
• Many people are opposed to the concept of mixing genes from different organisms as they view this as tampering with nature
• People of different faiths or cultures, even vegetarians, are against genetic engineering, because GM food may contain the genes of prohibited of avoided foods
