Mining

• When trees, plants and topsoil are removed so that mines, in particular surface mines, can be developed, the natural habitats of plant and animal species are destroyed
• This leads to soil erosion and soil degradation that decrease the number of habitats available for indigenous species
• Possible actions to reduce the impact of mining on habitat destruction:

  • Place mining companies under legal obligation to rehabilitate the damaged environment when a mine is closed
