  • Hindenburg was the hero of the first world war and the president of the Weimar republic
  • Bruning was the current chancellor before Hitler got elected
  • Papen was a friend of Hindenburg and a politician
  • Schleider was an army general
  • In April 1932, Hindenburg stood for re-election as president. No party had 50 percent of the vote so he remained as president. During this time Bruning also banned the SA
  • In May 1932, Bruning decided to buy land to house the unemployed. Hindenburg did not like this and Bruning resigned.
  • After Bruning resigned, he was replaced by Papen who was put as Chancellor by Schleider. Schleider also planned a Coalition with the Nazis, Hitler agreeing as long as the SA was unbanned.
  • In July 1932, further elections took place, with much fighting between communists and Nazis. Hitler demanded to be made Chancellor, however Hindenburg refused
  • In July 1932, Nazi votes increased by 20 percent from 1930
  • In November 1932, further election was held and Schleicher warned Hindenburg that if Papen remains as Chancellor, then a civil war will happen. Hindenburg removed Papens role as Chancellor
  • In December 1932 Schleicher became Chancellor. However, he had little support from the Nazis or the public.
  • In January 1933, Papen persuaded Hindenburg that Hitler being chancellor would protect Germany from becoming a military dictatoriship, as Schleicher proposed in December 1923. Hitler became chancellor and Papen became vice to keep a check on Hitler
