  • Parliament had the support of the House of Commons but not the Lords
  • 300 MPs declared for Parliament and 175 for King ( There were approx. 600 MP’s)
  • 80 lords declared for the King 30 for parliament
  • Merchants and Puritans for Parliament which meant Parliament had the support of people who created a disposable income
  • A person’s religion seems to be the most important determining factor in deciding which side a person who support in this war. Very few of these men had some military training
  • Parliament had South East and this gave them access to resources of iron, cloth, leather needed to supply an army
  • It also gave them control over the most populous parts of the country and the major towns
  • East Anglia and London were the most economically important areas in the country
  • Parliament also had control of the ports and the navy. This was significant to prevent foreign invasion of royalist support and they were economically important areas
  • Parliament had the resources to sustain a long war
