Purification of water samples from different sources

• What is the purpose of this practical?

  To change the water sample into pure water
• What are the risks of this experiment?

  The experimenter could burn themselves on hot equipment
• Describe the method used to change a water sample into pure water (Pt 1)

  1. Use an indicator to analyse the pH of the sample Set up the equipment and heat the sample to 100 degrees Celsius, turning the sample from a liquid to gas

  2. The water will collect in the condenser and turn back into a liquid, before being collected in the beaker

  
• Describe the method used to change a water sample into pure water (Pt 2)

  3. Once the water collected has evaporated, measure the remaining solid's mass to find out the amount of dissolved solids in the sample
