Repeated measures

Cards (4)

  • all participants experience both conditions of the experiment
  • Counterbalancing is a technique used to deal with order effects when using a repeated measures design. With counterbalancing, the participant sample is divided in half, with one half completing the two conditions in one order and the other half completing the conditions in the reverse order
  • order effect- the order of the conditions having an effect of participants' behaviour. They may perform better in the 2nd condition because they know what to do
  • evaluation:
    • fewer participants meaning there is less time spent recruiting
    • order effects could create boredom which could cause deterioration in performance
    • demand characteristics is a feature of repeated measures
    • participant variables are controlled
    • participants may work out the aim of the study when they experience all conditions of the experiment
