• every member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected
• the researcher makes a list of everyone in the population
• each person is assigned a number
• the numbers are then selected randomly
• strengths:

  • unbiased
  • widely accepted : each member has the same probability of being selected
• weaknesses:

  • difficult and time-consuming
  • the sample may not be representative
