ATP

Cards (4)

  • ATP only releases a small manageable amount of energy at a time;
    It is small and soluble so can be easily transported around the cell;
    It's easily broken down so energy can be released quickly;
    It can be quickly re-made;
    ATP can't pass out of the cell so the cell always has an immediate source of energy.
  • ATP can make other molecules more reactive by transferring one of its phosphate groups to them - this process is called phosphorylation.
  • Label this ATP molecule:
    A) Phosphates
    B) Ribose sugar
    C) Adenine
  • What is the equation for the release of energy by ATP?
    ATP + H2O --> ADP + Pi + Energy
