  • Health is the state of physical and mental well- being.
    Following factors affect health : diet, communicable and non-communicable disease, stress
  • Different types of disease may interact for example : viral infection can trigger cancers
    several physical ill health can lead to depression and other mental illness
    immune reaction initially caused by pathogen can trigger allergies
  • Stent - inserted into blocked cornonary arteries to keep them open. Widens the artery so it allows more blood flow, more oxygen is supplied to heart, lesss serious surgery
  • Statins - reduce blood cholesterol levels, slowing down deposit of fatty material in arteries. Advantages - effective, no need for surgery
    Disadvantage - muscle pain, headache
  • Replace faulty heart valves - heart valves that leak or do not open fully, preventing control of blood flow through heart, can be replaced with biological or mechanical valves. Advantages - allows control of blood flow through heart, long-term cure for faulty heart valves
    Disadvantages - can involve major surgery- risk of infection, blood loss. Risk from anaesthetic used during surgeryt
  • Transplants - if the heart fails a donor heart, or heart and lungs , can be transplanted artificial hearts can be used to keep patients alive.
    Advantages - long term cure for most serious heart conditions
    Disadvantages - lengthy, major surgery
  • Malignant tumour - cancerous tumours that invade neighbouring tissues and spread to other parts of body in blood
  • Benign tumours - tumours that are non- cancerous, doesn't spread in body
  • carcinogen - substance that cause cancers to develop
