Types of experiments

Subdecks (1)

Cards (7)

  • Lab- IV is manipulated by the experimenter, highly controlled setting, high control over extraneous variables so causality can be established, however lacks mundane realism so may not provide ecologically valid data
  • Field- IV is manipulated by the experimenter, takes place in a natty setting, high mundane realism so should provide ecological valid data, has low control over extraneous variables so causality cannot be established.
  • Natty experiments-IV not manipulated by experimenter- IV is pre existing and so groups have been created by some other events, takes place in any setting, low control over pp variables but high ecological validity
  • Qausi- IV not manipulated by experimenter, IV is a characteristic of the participant eg age or gender, takes place in any setting, you can compare two groups to test differences between characteristics in a controlled setting so can have high control over extraneous variables so causality can be established, has low control over extraneous variables as pps cannot be randomly allocated to groups
  • quasi- IV not manipulated, is a characteristic of pps, can compare pps on the characteristic in a contolled setting- cause and effect, low control over pp variables
