the structure of a cholinergic synapse

Cards (4)

  • a synapse is a junction between two or more neurons where one neuron can communicate, or signal another neuron.
  • Between two neurons there is a small gap called the synaptic cleft, it is approx 20 nanometres wide
  • an action potential cannot bridge the synaptic cleft. instead the action potential in the pre-synaptic neuron causes the release of neuro transmitters, these will diffuse across the synaptic cleft and create a new action potential in the post-synaptic neuron.
  • Acetylcholine is used as the neurotransmitter in cholinergic synapses.
