  • Anti school subcultures are formed in bottom sets. When students are set and streamed, the bottom set tend to have more behaviour problems. In general, these set tend to see themselves as failures at school and look for status by participating in anti school activities. Disrespecting teachers, sloppy uniform, no regard for school rules. therefore, anti school groups can lead to under achievement.
  • teacher labelling has a bigger impact. If a teacher labels the student as deviant and stupid then the child is likely to act on behaving in this manner. This is known as a self-fulfilling prophecy (Howard Becker). When a child accepts this label, they may act up, neglect studies and fail. The power of the label is more important than grouping.
  • Pro school subcultures are formed in top sets. In top sets, there are more positive school cultures. Here, prefect usually dominate and students from middle-class backgrounds. These children want to achieve and participate in activities to help them perform well for example extra curricular activities, clubs, represent the school in events, smart uniform etc. this can help create achievement
  • Parental attitudes are a bigger influence. Some parents invest ally of money into the education of their child and expect the child to work hard to achieve the highest grades. With this, parents may pressure children to consistently achieve A grades and make high expectations known. Parent impact is more important
