  • Only 55% of 5-14 year olds were enrolled in schools and literacy rates were just 70%. The new republican government therefore made education a priority, building 7,000 schools in its first year

  • working class became anti church due to the belief that the catholic church was the guardian of interests of the Spanish traditional elites
  • lots of poverty in rural areas , as work for farmers were only seasonal. many moved to urban areas where pay and working conditions were better , this resulted in the creation of 'shanty towns' in big cities
