  • changes to priests and clergy - clergy banned from education. priests no longer paid a wage by the state
  • effects of reform of church:
    • church alienated
    • secular education
    • largely catholic spain angered by reform , opposed Republic
    • nuns attacked by radicals
  • support for CEDA grew as it was a right wing party that aimed to protect traditional values including influence of church. many catholic people began to support them after the reforms.
  • second republic reformed the church because:
    • believed the churches traditional control over ordinary civilians was a threat in the gov's ability to govern and its ability to enforce democratic aims
