urban pollution

Cards (5)

  • what is carbon monoxide
    Carbon monoxide
Is emitted from road congestion (90%) it affects the transportation of oxygen around the boy and this leads to the social impact of headaches, nausea and fatigue
  • what is nitrogen dioxide
    Nitrogen dioxide
In urban areas there is twice as much as in rural areas, due to road transport, industry such as power station Nitrogen dioxide enhances the greenhouse effect and accelerates weathering of buildings and acid rain (environmental +economic) it also leads to medical issues such as inflammation of the lungs and
  • issue with nitrogen dioxide
The most common in urban areas 200 times greater concentration than rural areas the major cause is burning of oils and coals in industry an power stations this leads to recipitory issues, narrows airways and can be eventually life threatening. Also mixes with nitrogen oxide to produce acid rain what is the issue with sulphur dioxide
  • what is photchemical smog
the action of sunlight + nitrogen oxide + hydrocarbons (from vehicle exhausts) leads to a chemical reaction that produces ozone (which is oxygen gases this protects the upper atmosphere but is very dangerous o humans when it develops lower down in the troposphere) The impacts are headaches, eye irritation, chest pain and coughing it can also have environmental impacts causing damage to plants it is a major issue in Los Angeles due to high density of vehicles and traffic and frequent sun and the topography
  • what legislation has been passed to reduce air pollution
2010 Air Quality standard act (UK)
UK Clean Air Act of 1956 and 1968
    Waste and emission act 2003
