competition + interdependence

Cards (10)

  • In 'ecology', it is important to know that all organisms have relationships.
    • Therefore, if something changes, it can affect other parts of an ecosystem.
Such as predators not having enough to eat because the population of mice has declined.
  • A habitat is the place where an organism lives.
  • The 'population' is all of the organisms of a particular species that live in a habitat.
  • The 'community' is all the populations of different species that live together in a habitat.
  • Biotic factors are the living factors of an environment.
    • For example, the number of predators.
  • Abiotic factors are the non-living factors of an environment.
    • For example, temperature and soil pH.
  • An 'ecosystem' is the interaction of a community of living organisms with the non-living parts of their environment.
  • Organisms have to compete with each other in order to get enough resources (such as food, territory and mates).
    • This competition may be with the same species or different species.
  • Interdependence is the idea that all species depend on other species in some way.
  • Plants compete for;
    • Water
    • Mineral ions
    • Light
    • Space
