On the
16th August
2004
a flash flood occurred in
Boscastle
Causes of the flood
Very
heavy rain
- a month’s rain in just
2
hours and the soil was already
waterlogged
Impermeable
rock and
clay
soils
Located in a
steep
sided valley
Located near a
confluence
(both rivers burst their banks)
Flood Management
-
£4.5 million
Raised the car park by
10 meters
Made the river channel
deeper
and
wider
Made a
drain
to remove
excess
water to the lower course of the river
Do the flood management strategies work?
We
aren’t
sure as there hasn’t been a flood since but don’t know whether it is due to the
strategies
or the fact there just hasn’t been a
flood
