Boscastle

Cards (4)

  • On the 16th August 2004 a flash flood occurred in Boscastle
  • Causes of the flood
    1. Very heavy rain - a month’s rain in just 2 hours and the soil was already waterlogged
    2. Impermeable rock and clay soils
    3. Located in a steep sided valley
    4. Located near a confluence (both rivers burst their banks)
  • Flood Management - £4.5 million
    1. Raised the car park by 10 meters
    2. Made the river channel deeper and wider
    3. Made a drain to remove excess water to the lower course of the river
  • Do the flood management strategies work?
We aren’t sure as there hasn’t been a flood since but don’t know whether it is due to the strategies or the fact there just hasn’t been a flood
