• martial law declared
• reversed reforms made by republican gov such as land reforms. wealthy landowners got their land back
• trade unions + strikes banned
• march 1938 -Spanish syndical organisation replaced workers union , NO workers right , power given to factory owners + industrialists
• church restored their powerful position
• October 1936 - crucifixes in all classrooms in nationalist zones
• 1938 - mixed schools banned. girls taught by female teachers , boys taught by male teachers
• embraced religious festivals to raise morale
• more money could be spent on consumer goods due to military support from italy + germany
• food more readily available due to Franco's control over major agricultural regions
• women expected to confrom to. tradiitonal gender roles
• right wing parties established womens sections and recruited female members e.g Carlists
• right wing parties still believed women should uphold conservative traditions , women confined to charity work and food production , NOT fighting
• women who wore masculine clothing , sexually alluring clothing or wore make up were looked down upon
• sep 1936 - divorce + civil marriage outlawed , girls education formulated to prepare them for domestic roles
• many women were forced to turn to sex work as their husbands had died in the war and they had zero welfare payments from the government.
• sex work was opposed by church , but was supported by Nationalist army as soilders often paid for sex
• paid women discouraged
• labour charter - march 1938. set out to liberate married women from work in factories + workshops
• women were encouraged to enlist in support of war in Oct 1937 by helping out in running of youth centre , public canteens and health services
• victims of Nationalist atrocities were left in streets to terrorise the population and were often buried in heaps in cemeteries without burial rights
• homosexuality = banned
• nationalist atrocities were an attempt to attack Catholic Spain's foes e.g famous gay Federico Garcia Loca
• feb 1937 - 40,000 killed in Malaga after capturing the town
• Teruel region - 1,000 men , women and children killed by Nationalists. they were critical of the Nationalist regime , spread fear
• Falange humiliated and killed supporters of the republic
• use of terror and violence meant fewer people were willing to oppose the republic
• Franco supported killing those in trade unions , socialists and communists
• gay men were killed and lesbians underwent forced isolation and conversion therapy
• women who didn't stick to conservative society norms were killed
• liberated women were a threat to social order
• heterosexual monogamy within marriage was acceptable
