  • women were encouraged to enlist in support of war in Oct 1937 by helping out in running of youth centre , public canteens and health services
  • victims of Nationalist atrocities were left in streets to terrorise the population and were often buried in heaps in cemeteries without burial rights

  • feb 1937 - 40,000 killed in Malaga after capturing the town
  • Teruel region - 1,000 men , women and children killed by Nationalists. they were critical of the Nationalist regime , spread fear
  • Falange humiliated and killed supporters of the republic
  • use of terror and violence meant fewer people were willing to oppose the republic
  • Franco supported killing those in trade unions , socialists and communists
  • gay men were killed and lesbians underwent forced isolation and conversion therapy
  • women who didn't stick to conservative society norms were killed
  • liberated women were a threat to social order
  • heterosexual monogamy within marriage was acceptable
