In order for any organism to
survive
, it must be
adapted
to its
environment.
Structural adaptations are
physical
features that we see.
For example, an organisms
shape
or
colour.
Behavioural adaptations are the way an organism
behaves
or
acts.
For example, elephants
flapping
their
ears
to spray themselves with
water
in order to
cool
down.
This is a
behavioural
adaptation to the
hot
environment they live in.
Functional adaptations are the
processes
inside an
organism.
For example, their
metabolism
or their
reproductive
system.
Examples of functional adaptations are
desert
animals.
For example, camels produce very little
sweat
and they accumulate lots of
fat
in their
humps
to break down later in order to release
water.
Extremophiles are
microorganisms
(such as bacteria or archaea) that are adapted to live in an
extreme
environment.
For example, living in high
temperatures
or high
salt
concentrations.
