    • Metal atoms-lose electrons=full shell
    • Non metals-gain electrons=full shell
  • Ionic bonding
    • Forms between two atoms when an electron is transferred from one atom to the other
    • = positive-negative ion pair
  • Properties of ionic compounds
    • Can conduct electricity when dissolved/melted in water because the ions are free to move and so charge can flow
    • Not when solid as ions are not free to move
