  • Kundiman - a genre of traditional Filipino love songs - a traditional seranade that could be for loved ones, for family, and country.

  • The Harana first gained popularity in the early part of the Spanish Period, Its influence comes from folk music of Spain and the mariachi sounds of Mexico. It is a traditional form of courtship music in which a man woos a woman by singing underneath her window at night.

  • Harana music has its very own distinctive style and a clear stamp of authenticity. In musical terms, the rhythm is habanera which is in 2/4 time.
  • Habanera is a term used mostly in western classical music. Instead the haranistas refer to this rhythm as danza. The arrangement is simple and straight forward. It always starts with an introduction of solo guitar, then verse 1 followed by verse 2, then a little bit of solo guitar in the middle, then back to verse 2 until the end.

  • Ruben Tagalog (October 18, 1922 - March 5, 1985) known as the "Hari ng Kundiman" was a Filipino actor and musician, famous for his works in the Kundiman style. He was also one of the founders of the singing group Mabuhay Singers. He performed for the Japanese during their occupation of the Philippines.
