What’s the difference between a Phospholipid and Triglyceride?
They have a Phosphate group in place of one of their fatty chains
They have a polar hydrophilic end “head” and two non polar hydrophobic “tails”
These mixed properties are what makes them good for cell membranes
Phospholipids- Uses
When mixed with water, phospholipids form droplet spheres with the hydrophilic heads facing the water and hydrophobic tails facing each other
Alternatively, they may form a phospholipid bilayer. This traps a compartment of water in the middle, separating it from external water. This is called a Liposome, and has a similar structure to a membrane surrounding a cell
