L21 - Angular Kinetics: Moment of Inertia

Cards (5)

  • The resistance of a body to rotate is called mass moment of inertia
  • Inertia is related to the mass of the object & the distance of the mass from the axis of rotation
  • The greater the mass moment of inertia, the more difficult it will be for the body to change its angular velocity
  • Radius of gyration is a term used when we are dealing with segmented masses where the axis of rotation is not located through the CoM
  • Radius of Gyration:
Therefore, for airbourne rotating mass we have a total moment of inertia that is the sum of the local (ICM) & remote (mk^2) terms
