Fullerenes

Cards (6)

  • Fullerenes are Hexagonal rings of carbon atoms (but can contain
five or seven membered rings) with Molecules of carbon with hollow shapes
  • Some Fullerenes have a spherical shape – this means that they can role over each other and so can be used as lubricants
  • Some fullerenes have cylinder shapes (carbon nanotubes) –
they have a high length to diameter ratio so have a
    high tensile strength
  • Fullerenes bonding is like that of the carbon in graphite so they conduct electricity – used in nanotechnology, electronics and materials
  • These are some structures of Fullerences
  • This is a structure of Fullerene
