moment and levers

• when a force causes an object to rotate about a pivot point the turning effect is called moment of a force
• if an object is balanced , the total clockwise moment about a pivot equals anticlockwise moment about that pivot
• levers and gears can be used to

  • transmit the rotational effects of forces
  • magnify either the size of the applied force or the distance the force moves over
• levers and gears

  • they are force multipliers
  • turning effect depends on the distance between the edge of the gear and the centre
