  • "trampled calmly over the child's body and left her screaming."

the adverb "calmly" is oxymoric and suggests a sadistic attitude, that he has no regard for human life. He has no compassion for the girl, as "left her screaming" is a direct reference to her terror. This evokes sympathy from the reader.
  • "an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation"

this element of ambiguity allows the reader to create their own image of Hyde, which possibly may be scarier than he actually is, therefore emphasises the evilness within him. Mystery was very popular in the Victorian era.
  • "satan's signature upon his face"

this likens Hyde to the embodiment if evil. "signature" suggests he has been claimed by the devil, and that the devil is approving of his actions.
  • "shrank back with a hissing intake of the breath"

Hyde is animalistic and he links to the idea of ativism. He doesn't possess human qualities, like having a moral conscience, instead is relentless and unforgiving. His inhumane traits make him disliked by the reader as his personality depicts elements of typically masculine behaviour that men in the Victorian era were expected to conceal.
