    • Definition: “Sports are institutionalised competitive activities that involve vigorous physical exertion or use of relatively complex physical skills (Coakley, 2008)
  • What is Sport?
    • Organisation that makes rules for fair play in a fair competition
    • Competition is very crucial (brought up in exam)
    • Crucial aspect that makes sport different in a psychological aspect
    • Wouldn’t be stressed if it wasn’t for competition (competition anxiety)
  • Should it be considered a Sport?
    • Darts is a sport but not a lot of physical exertion, same with chess
    • Complex mental skills w/ chess
    • eSPORTS: competition, rules, skills etc
    • Different but what makes it similar is the definition of sport
    • Is a card game a sport?
    • Important as who gets funding
    • Sport can be varied
    • Comes in different shapes & sizes, but involves competition
  • What is Competition:
    • “A situation in which a comparison of an individual’s performance is made with some standard of excellence, in the presence of others who are aware of the criteria (standard) for comparison and can evaluate the comparison process" (Martens, 1975, 1976)
  • What is considered Competition:
    • Can’t compete against yourself
    • Training/versing self doesn’t count as sport
    • Social psych: can have motivation for wanting to beat PB but isn’t competition
  • What is considered Competition:
    • Why people choke in competition
    • Causes stress/anxiety
    • Now being judged/measured by others (know they can judge you accurately)
    • A knowledgeable audience
    • Can be coach, bench, audience/supporters, team mates
    • Competitor doesn’t physically have to be their for it to be sport
    • Can still judge score/performance
    • Know gonna be judged by others before you even start participating
    • Can create stress/pressure before even perform
    • Expectations/pressure

    • Performance standard
    • A score/time/distance
    • Know what that standard is
    • Nonegotiable
    • Comparison process
    • Someone gonna judge you against that performance standard
    • Social evaluation
    • Being evaluated by others in a social situation
