  • what is the aim of this practicle ?
to obtain dry crystals (of copper sulphate)
  • step 1:
take a base (e.g. powdered copper oxide) and mix with a heated acid (e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid) to cause a neutralisation reaction that produces a salt solution (copper sulphate solution in this case)
  • step 2:
add excess copper oxide indicated by unreacted powder at the bottom of the beaker
  • step 3:
using a filter funnel and filter paper, filter the solution into a conical flask
  • step 4 :
pour filtrate into an evapourating basin on a beaker of water over a tripod, gauze and bunsen burner and heat gently
  • once crystals have started to form pour remaining solution into a crystalising dish and leave for at least 24 hours
  • remove crystals with a spatula and pat dry between 2 peices of filter paper to remove any remaining solution
