  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 1) Psychological Core:
    • Internal & consistent personality characteristics
    • INNER SELF; basic values, beliefs, identity, self-esteem
    • Most consistent key aspects
    • Hard to access & measure
    • Can measure a wee bit such as self-esteem
  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 2) Typical Responses:
    • Learned methods of dealing with the environment (ie. traits)
    • A valid indicator of the Psychological Core
    • Traits, are learned
    • Can be taught something & reject it → still have choice
    • A lot research measures traits
    • Traits = wheelhouse part of research that can measure consistently
  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 3) Role-Related Behaviours:
    • Behaviours that change in response to environmental situations
    • NOT a valid indicator of the psychological core

    • Personality that they choose to present
  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 3) Role-Related Behaviours:
    • Not a good measure of psych core bc/ these don’t mean who we are
    • Do stuff out of our character
    • As social influence
    • Inhabit roles (eg leader)
    • As are asked to or think they should do that
    • Are important but not indicator of personality
  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 4) Social Environment:
    • 1, 2, & 3 exist within and are affected by the social environment (social group, society, culture, team)
    • 1 = Psychological Core; 2 = Typical Responses; 3 = Role-Related Behaviours
    • Where learn stuff
    • How are expected to act & behave (either reject or follow)
  • Hollander’s (1971) Model of Personality - 4 Components:
    • Dynamic/more changeable = role-related behaviours
    • Consistent = psychological core
    • Like an apple; know is core from experience (is consistent), is still there even though can’t see
