Interference
is an explanation for
forgetting
in
long-term
memory.
Interference
occurs when information that is
similar
in format gets in the way of recalling
desired
information.
There are
two
types of interference:
retroactive
and
proactive.
Retroactive
interference is when more recent information interferes with recalling
older
information.
Proactive
interference is when
old
information prevents the recall of
newer
information.
Proactive
interference
new
memories are forgotten.
Retroactive
interference
old
memories are forgotten.
Kane
&
Engle
(2000) showed that individuals with greater
working
memory
span were less susceptible to
proactive
interference.
