    Cinemas became a popular pastime for US citizens in the 1920s. Televisions had not yet been invented. This period was called the golden age of Hollywood. By 1929 around 110 million people visited the cinema each week.

    Cinema technology developed significantly:
    Silent Films - 1890s-1920s there was no dialogue or sound, but a piano in the cinema would add music
    Films in Colour - 1922 began developing coloured films
    Talkies - 1927 talkies were introduced, it destroyed a lot of careers

    Clara Bow - Film star who many people idolised, however her career was ended by talkies
    Rudolph Valentino - Film star who many people idolised, his career also ended from talkies
  • The Hays Code(movies) - Majority of states threatened to ban films due to Americans being worried about some of the sexual content. Banned nudity
    limited the time people could kiss for (3s)
    No film character could profit from safe-cracking, arson or murder.

    1919 - movies had a weekly audience of 35 million
    1930 - movies had a weekly audience of 100 million
  • Star System
    Ways movie studios would promote their starring actors
    Magazines, interviews, photos shoots, radio shows

    1929 - Hollywood Film studios were making 500 films a year
    1927 - First ever talkie 'The Jazz Singer' --> boosted cinema audiences to an all time high
