    • Metals are elements that react to form positive ions
    • Non metals are elements that react to from negative ions
    • Metals to the left of the periodic table don’t have many electrons to remove
    • Metals towards the bottom of the periodic table have many shells so outer electrons have weaker attraction to nucleus
    • Not much energy needed to remove electrons
    • Non metals to the right of the periodic table have alot of electrons to remove to get a full outer shell
    • Non metals to the top of the periodic table have less shells so outer electrons are closer to the nucleus and so have strong attraction
    • so, non metals share or gain elections to get full outer shell
    • metals have metallic bonding so they have similar physical properties:
    • strong and malleable
    • good conductors of heat and electricity
    • high boiling and melting points
    • non metals don’t have metallic bonding and so are:
    • dull looking
    • brittle
    • are not always solid at room temp
    • don’t conduct electricity
    • lower density
    • transition metals have ions with different charges, form coloured compounds and are useful as catalysts
    • transition metals have properties of a typical metal
