  • Why was regeneration needed in Park Hill flats?
    • They were built in 1961.
    • Sheffield's steel industry collapsed (biggest employer), so in 1984 unemployment was 15%.
    • Had high levels of crime (mugging due to poor lighting, drug use and dealing, graffiti).
    • Neglected properties were run down, infected with cockroaches, damp, no noise insultaion - bad area to live in.
    • Became a 'no-go area' at night, as it was so dangerous.
    • No sewage system.
  • Positives of regeneration;
    • Flats are no longer eye sore.
    • Has a business community - creative and digital sector with 200 business on site.
    • Became a high profile venue.
    • Scottish Queen pud which was very dangerous, now hosts exhibitions and workshops.
    • Variety of flat sizes.
  • Negatives of regeneration;
    • Original residents couldn't return as their wasn't enough flats (less than 1/3 didn't return.
    • Flats become very expensive and unaffordable.
    • Regeneration is slow, so areas are still under renovation.
