  • postmodernity is characterised by choice regarding identity, religion etc. and it is dominated by the media
  • they believe that society is fragmented

  • meta-narratives (big stories) are no longer used to explain society, which is why religon is less important
  • truth is relative. truth is not fixed and universal, it is whatever individuals say it is
  • in postmodernity class is no longer the most important aspect of identity. sexuality, ethnicity, age etc. are seen as equally important to postmodernists
  • they believe that the Marxist theory of education is outdated because production is now based on 'flexible specialisation'. they see the education system as moving towards being customised for the individual

    low level of skill required, routine, mundane work

    workforce are skilled and adaptable, transferable skills are required and more prevalent

    reinforces inequality as inevitable and necessary and creates conformist, passive pupils

    produces students that are self motivated and able to self supervise. emphasises creativity and gives transferable skills
