Sir Robert Peel abolished the bloody code suring the 1820s. By 1841, the only crimes which carried the d.p were murder and treason
why did the bloody code/ public execution end?
BEHAVIOUR AT PUBLIC EXECUTIONS: while p.e were carried out, people laughed and drank. During the 1700s crowds at executions grew larger, partly as newspapers publicised them. Some factories even shut down on execution day.
MAINTAIN ORDER: crowds grew larger and gov lost control, always a danger of escape and rescue, if the public believed the convict was innocent. Gov was also worried that crows would be angry and riot or even a revolution
why did the bloody code/ public execution end?
PUNISHMENT DIDN'T FIT CRIME & JURIES: in early 1700s, 40% sentenced to death were hanged, by 1800s juries became less likely to convict as minor crimes were punished by death and that was too harsh. Meant bloody code no longer working as an effective punishment, property of law makers no longer protected as people were getting away w/ stealing.
criminals grew confidence, increase in crime
politicians began looking for diff punishments which would be more effective, by 1820stransportation was becoming more popular
