  • Osteomyelitis 

    Acute or chronic infection of the bone and surrounding soft tissues
  • Osteomyelitis
    MOST commonly caused by: Staphylococcus Aureus
  • Osteomyelitis Clinical Manifestions:
    • Temperature: High + MALAISE
    • Bone: Pain, Tenderness, Swelling, Redness
    • Difficulty with: weight-bearing
    • Wound site: Drainage
    • Sequestrum - necrosis of bone tissues
  • Osteomyelitis Diagnostic Tests:
    • CBC:High WBC - indicates presence of active infection
    • ESR:High - indicates inflammatory process
  • Osteomyelitis Management:
    • Analgesics
    • Antibiotics: IV for 4-6 weeks
    • Dressing changes technique: Sterile
    • Maintain proper body alignment and change position frequently to prevent contractures
    • Affected part: Immobilization to prevent fracture
  • Osteomyelitis Surgery:
    • Incision and drainage of bone abscess
    • Sequestrectomy - removal of dead, infected bone and cartilage
    • Bone grafting - recommended after repeated infections
