Describing, analysing and explaining fieldwork data

Cards (7)

  • Bi-Polar Analysis: You conducted three of these in Gloucester Docks; one at Bakers Quay and one in the central dock area and one at the end of the main basin
  • to present the bi-polar analysis results:
    • make a neat version of your raw data collection - mark with an 'x' the score for each category
    • colour in green pencil any boxes to the left of the 'x', if the 'x' is in the positive score, colour that green too
    • colour in red pencil any boxes to the right of the 'x', if the 'x' is in the negative score, colour that red too
    • if your score is '0' colour the left half of the box green and the right half red
  • What is the main purpose of your visit today: (bar chart because it has a lot of categories)
    • the most popular reason to visit gloucester docks was for shopping in 2018 with 39/101 people giving this as their main purpose
    • walking and just browsing was a clear second with 20/101 people
    • this is likely to be because the main facilities at the docks are shops and restaurants
    • as the questionnaire was carried out at 10-30 am, this was too early for lunch, which is why only 3 were listed as this
    • this indicates overall that the regeneration is likely to be successful socially but shopping also involves spending money so it is also successful economically
  • On your visit today, how much are you likely to spend? (pie chart because it only has 6 categories)
    • the majority of people planned to spend very little - either nothing or up to £25, this was 56% of people in total
    • this makes sense as 20/101 people were only going for a walk (previous data)
    • on the other hand, a 1/4 of respondents were spending £25-50 and 3% of £100, which is a very good amount considering it was a monday morning when most people are at work or school
    • it is reasonable to suggest that more people would be spending a higher amount if the survey had been taken on a weekend
  • 3 words to describe how you feel about the regeneration of gloucester docks (a word cloud)
    • it is clear that peoples perception of gloucester docks is largely positive, with the most common words used to describe it as 'clean, 'good', 'quiet', 'modern', 'bright' and 'beautiful'
    • these all suggest that socially, the regeneration of gloucester docks has been a success
    • there are some words such as 'dirty' and 'disappointing', but these are rare in amongst the positives
  • footfall (divided bar chart)
    • in the shopping area, there were more younger generations, perhaps families shopping with young children
    • overall the largest visiting age group was 35-60, with 33% from this age range overall
    • the lowest visiting age group with 6% of visitors in this age group overall was children aged 3-17, this would have been expected as most children would have been at school
