  • Who was Vesalius
    born in Belgium 1514 he became a professor aged 22
    respected Galen's work yet was one of the first to challenge his ideas
    was one of the first to dissect a human body
    1543 published 'fabric of the human body' which proved:
    • breast bone is 3 parts not 7
    • jaw bone is one part not 2
    • disapproved that blood travelled through invisible holes in the septum and into the heart
    his book also showed the body in more detail than ever due to the new invention of the printing press in 1451. it was available across Europe to train doctors. it encouraged dissection

    • ' fabric of the human body' was being used to train doctors in England and correct earlier mistakes in the 1560s
    • he changed attitudes of some doctors
    • triggered research into anatomy

    • By the late 1600s most students were encouraged to have their own findings and hands on dissection
    • other doctors such as William Harvey and Pare followed in his footsteps of dissection
    • one of his students published his own books about the structure of the skull and ear

    many doctors disapproved of his work and followed to follow Galen
    this was only heightened as no one was healthier due to his discoveries
