    Born in France 1510
    from 1536 he spent the next 30 years as an army surgeon, his experiences on the battle field led to important break throughs in surgery.
  • What did Pare discover
    • Developed artificial limbs instead of crutches. he designed over 50 kinds of false body parts
    • Ran out of oil to treat gunpowder wounds so he used a mixture of egg yolk, oil of roses, and turpentine. it worked, numbed pain and stopped infection
    • he experimented with ligatures( silk threads) around individual blood vessels to stop bleeding. reduced the risk of severe blood oss

    i.e henry viii gave barber surgeons a charter to allow barber surgeon to become a respectable profession

    lack of anaesthesia made operations excruciatingly painful
    traditional practises were still heavily rooted ( cauterisation)
    surgical education was not standardized which made his techniques hard to learn and apply effectively
