Common reactions

Cards (8)

  • There are some types of reactions, for example, thermal decomposition, oxidation, combustion and displacement reactions.
  • Thermal Decomposition is when a reactant breaks down into a few different products due to heat.
  • Oxidation is the reaction between an element/compound with oxygen to form another compound
  • Metals can be oxidised.
  • Displacement Reactions occur when the different parts of compounds swap due to changes in reactivity
  • Combustion is the scientific word for "burning". It occurs when burning of something (usually fuels) that releases energy as light and heat.
  • Complete Combustion occurs when there is enough oxygen available so all carbon burns completely - this produces Carbon Dioxide which is harmless.
  • Incomplete Combustion occurs when there isn't enough oxygen present so not all carbon burns completely - this produces Carbon Monoxide which is poisonous.
