  • More than a third of Bristol is open space and over 90 per cent of the population live within 350m of parkland or waterways. There are eight nature reserves and three hundred parks in the city. Queen Square was once a dual carriageway, but has now been transformed into an open space with cycle routes
  • There have been a number of green initiatives for the city:
    • Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) to be raised to top conservation condition by 2026
    • 27 per cent of the city to be part of a wildlife network
    • objectives set for wildlife in non-natural habitats, e.g. cemeteries
    • 30 per cent of the city to be covered with trees.
  • A new housing development at Portbury Wharf was allowed by the local council on condition that the neighbouring area was made intoa nature reserve
  • The areas of open water and meadow provide an invaluable habitat for wildlife, birds and plants.
