More than a third of Bristol is open space and over 90 per cent of the population live within 350m of parkland or waterways. There are eight nature reserves and threehundredparks in the city. Queen Square was once a dualcarriageway, but has now been transformed into an openspace with cycle routes
There have been a number of green initiatives for the city:
Sites of Nature Conservation Interest (SNCI) to be raised to top conservation condition by 2026
27 per cent of the city to be part of a wildlifenetwork
objectives set for wildlife in non-natural habitats, e.g. cemeteries
30 per cent of the city to be covered with trees.
A new housing development at PortburyWharf was allowed by the local council on condition that the neighbouring area was made intoa naturereserve
The areas of openwater and meadow provide an invaluable habitat for wildlife,birds and plants.
