  • Plot: the sequence of events that make up a story
  • Point of view: perspective from which the story is told (first-person, third-person, limited or third person omniscient)
  • Setting: where and when the story takes place
  • Irony: a contrast between expectations and reality
  • Tone: author's attitude toward the subject or audience
  • Mood: atmosphere or emotional setting created by a piece of writing
  • Simile: comparison using "like" or "as"
  • Metaphor: direct comparison between two things WITHOUT "like" or "as"
  • Symbolism: when an object or action represents something beyond its literal meaning
  • Author's Purpose: reason the author has written the text (inform, persuade, entertain)
  • Sonnet: 14-line poem written in iambic pentameter, often with a specific rhyme scheme
  • Rhyme Scheme: pattern of rhymes at the end of each line of a poem, labeled with letters (ABABAB)
  • Iambic Pentameter: a type of meter with five iambs (unstressed-stressed syllables) per lines, commonly used in sonnets
